The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms. Unless specifically stated, the submitter will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.
1. Avelina Skarlet : NEW NAME and DEVICE Per pale vert and purpure, an owl contourny perched upon a branch and in sinister chief a roundel argent.
The name is English. Avelina is a female given name found in “Index of Names in the 1381 Suffolk Poll Tax,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael. http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/english/suffolk1381.pdf. Skarlet is found as a byname in “An Index to the 1332 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Lincolnshire, England,” sorted by byname (S-Sl), Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/LincLSR/BynS1.html. The client desires a female name.
2. Emelyn Fraser: NEW NAME and DEVICE Or, two triquetra purpure and a thistle proper.
Emelyn is an English female given name dated to 1379 in Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames: Emmeline,” Talan Gwynek, www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/reaney/reaney.cgi?Emmeline. Fraser is a Lowland Scottish name. It is dated to 1502, 1509 in Early 16th Century Scottish Lowland Names,” Sharon L. Krossa, http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/lowland16/. Scots and English are part of the same Language Group under Appendix C of SENA. The client desires a female given name, and is most interested in the language/culture of the name (none given). She will not accept Major Changes to the name.
3. Jaida al-Zanjaniyya: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, August 2013 Per bend Or and argent, a winged catamount couchant vert and on a chief azure three keys bendwise sinister wards to base argent.
The name was registered July 2009.
The previous submission, Per fess argent and azure, a winged catamount couchant vert and three keys in pall argent., was returned for violating SENA A3D2c, which requires that all charges in a group must be in identical postures/orientations or in an arrangement that includes posture/orientation. A3D2c states, "A charge group in which postures for different charges must be blazoned individually will not be allowed without period examples of that combination of postures." The charges here do not have comparable postures or orientations, but they also are not in a unified arrangement, as the keys in pall must be blazoned separately from the winged catamount in order to adequately describe their positioning.” Charges have been rearranged to solve the issue and to please the client.
4. Samuel Henry Ickeforde Thomas: NEW NAME The name is English. Samuel is a male given name found in 16th Century Gloucestershire Names,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/english/late16.html. Henry is a male given name, found in the same source. Ickeford
is a village in the Aylesbury Vale District of Buckinghamshire,
England. It was recorded as Iforde
in the Domesday Book of 1086, and forms to the present Ickeford
appear as Hicord, Hitford, Ikeford and Ikeforde
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ickford).
It appears that through most of period, the name was recorded with
an initial Y: Reaney & Wilson, sn. Ickford has <John
Yckeford> 1383. Mills sn. Ickford has <Iforde> from the
Domesday book, and <Ycford> 1175. The

(1908) Thomas is the client's legal last name; it is found as a byname in “Index of Names in the 1541 Subsidy Roll of London: Surnames of English men and women,” Sara L. Uckelman, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/english/engsurlondon1541.html. One sees double given names and double surnames in late period English names. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the spelling of the name; he will not accept Major Changes to the name.
The submitting herald includes a disclaimer: “I do not know if this names (base on the initials of the various name parts) would be considered potentially offensive base on SENA PN.5.” It seems that abbreviations of period phrases (e.g., SPQR, INRE) did not actually form acronyms, pronounceable abbreviations that are formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word (e.g., Laser, tank); this might be in dubious taste, but it isn't glaring (to me).
