The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms.
Unless specifically stated, the submitter will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.
1. Abu Razin Babak al-Basir: NEW NAME and DEVICE Argent, on a pall inverted vert between three ants in annulo sable a crescent Or.
The name is Arabic. All elements are found in “Period Arabic Names and Naming Practices,” Da'ud ibn Auda, as it the construction ( http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/arabic-naming2.htm ). The pattern is kunya [honorific title, here connoting the client's son]+ 'ism + laqab [a combination of words into a byname or epithet, usually religious, relating to nature, a descriptive, or of some admirable quality the person had (or would like to have) ]. Razin and Babak are both masculine names ('isms). al-Basir is a laquab. The name means“Father of Razin, Babak, the wise.” The client desires a male name and is most interested in the meaning of the name.
2. Caitríona inghean Fáoláin Uí Gearóid: NEW NAME and DEVICE Or, an oak tree eradicated proper within an orle per pale azure and purpure.
The name is Irish Gaelic. Caitríona is a feminine Early Modern Irish Gaelic name, dated multiple times, 1360 through 1654, in “Index of Names in Irish Annals: Caitríona.” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan ( http://www.medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/Caiterina.shtml ). Fáoláin is the genitive case of Fáolán, a male Irish Gaelic name found in “Names and Naming Practices in the Red Book of Ormond (Ireland 14th Century),” Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn ( http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/lateirish/ormond.html ). I couldn't pinpoint that information in Tangwystyl's article, but Faolán/Faoláin is shown as an Early Modern Irish Gaelic form in Mari's article, dated in 1203 and 1423 ( http://www.medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Faelan.shtml ). It was suggested by Aryanhwy that Fáoláin needs to be lenited, to Fháoláin. The client has added a clan name that clears this potential conflict. Gearóid is a masculine given name has the same nominative and genitive forms; it is Early Modern Irish Gaelic, dated to 1486 and found in “Index of Names in Irish Annals: Gearóid,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan ( http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Gearoid.shtml ). The construction is one for Irish simple patronymic with clan affiliation bynames, via “Quick and Easy Gaelic Names,” Sharon L. Krossa ( http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/#clanaffiliationbyname ). The client desires a female name and is most interested in the spelling (actual spelling) and language/culture (Irish culture). She will not accept Major changes to the name.
Consider Teresa de Çaragoça: Or, a tree eradicated proper within a bordure denticulada azure. There is one CD for the type of peripheral and another CD for changing half of its tincture.
3. Clarice Alienor Neep: NEW BADGE (fieldless) A turnip proper within and conjoined to an annulet purpure.
The name appears in the July 2011 Atenveldt Letter of Intent.
4. Donndubán O'Domnaill: NEW DEVICE Per chevron gules and sable, a chevron embattled between two mazer cups and a compass rose Or.
The name appears in the August 2011 Atenveldt Letter of Intent.
5. Dubhchobhlaigh inghean an Bháird uí Néill: NEW DEVICE Per chevron vert and sable, two lanterns and an owl rising wings addorsed maintaining in its talons a rolled scroll argent.
The name was registered December 2010.
This should be clear of Gaston Trévoux (reg. 10/2000 via Atenveldt), Per chevron vert and sable, three owls argent. There is one CD for changing half the type; and another for changing the posture of half the owls.
6. Elizabeth Wold: NEW NAME and DEVICE Vert, a winged wolf sejant ululant between three crescents argent.
The name is English. This spelling of the feminine given name Elizabeth is dated as early as 1205 (Withycombe, 3rd edition, pp. 99-101 s.n. Elizabeth). The bynames in Þe Wold (1279) and atte Wolde (1327) are variants of the byname Wald, for someone living in or near the woods (Reaney and Wilson, 3rd edition, p 472 s.n. Wald). The client desires a female name and will not accept Major changes to the name. She likes this particular spelling of the byname, as this is the byname of her legal and SCA mother, Gwendolen Wold.
The closest name found is Isabeau of the Wylde Woode (reg. 01/1991 via the West); the bynames are significantly different.
Ululant is one step from period practice.
This is clear of Cáelán Ó Ruairc (reg. 02/2000 via AEthelmearc), Per pale azure and sable, a wolf sejant ululant between three decrescents argent., with a CD for the field, one for adding the wings, and one for the orientation of the crescents; Vs. Arianna McPhearson (reg. 03/1990 via the East), Sable, a fox sejant reguardant, its forepaws grasping an arrow inverted, between three increscents argent., with a CD for the field, and one for the wings; and Vs. Caitrina inghean Aindriasa (reg. 08/2004 via An Tir), Quarterly gules and sable, a winged fox sejant argent., with a CD for the field and one for adding the secondaries.
7. Elspeth von Bremen: NEW NAME CHANGE, to Elspeth Anne von Bremen The client's current name was registered July 1997. As her legal name is Elizabeth Anne, and most her friends include the “Anne” in her SCA name, she's decided to go with the flow. Anne is German feminine given name dated to 1372, 1383, in “Medieval German Given Names from Silesia: Women's Names,” Talan Gwynek ( http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/bahlow/bahlowFem.html ). She desires a female name and will not accept Major or Minor changes; if registered, her currently-registered name is to be released.
8. Heinrich der Brauer: NEW NAME and DEVICE Azure, a wooden barrel palewise proper winged and a chief argent.
The name is German. Heinrich is a masculine given name found in “German Names from 1495,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael ( http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/german/german1495.html ). While this paper did not demonstrate Brauer as an occupational byname for “brewer” (as it does for baker), der Brauer “the Brewer” is noted as a German occupational name in “Identifying German Names” ( http://maxkade.iupui.edu/nameword/apend-a.html ). The client desires a male name and is most interested in the language/culture of the name (German).
I'm rather amazed that a winged barrel/tun has yet to be registered...
9. Raven Mayne: DEVICE/BADGE EXCHANGE The client's name was registered January 2002.
He requests that his badge, Argent semy of ravens volant sable., registered February 2006, be made his device, and that his currently-held device, Argent, in pale a goute de sang and a tick on a chief sable a decrescent argent., February 2002, be retained as a badge. Paperwork is forwarded to Laurel.
10. Rodney Brus of Skyraffin: NEW NAME and DEVICE Argent, a dragon's head cabossed sable between two arrows in pile gules, barbed and fletched sable.
Rodney is the client's legal given name. Brus is a Scottish surname, a variant of Bruce; this form is dated to 1143 (The Surnames of Scotland, Black, pp. 108-109 s.n. Bruce). Skyraffin is a place on the Stoer Peninsula of northwestern Scotland (The Counties of Britain: A Tudor Atlas, John Speed, Pavilion, 1988). The client desires a male name and is most interested in the sound of the name. He would like it to be authentic for the Scottish language/culture. He will not accept Major changes to the name.
11. Trian Ruadh Mac Colmain: NEW NAME Trian is a masuline Irish Baelic given name found in “100 Most Popular Men's Names in Early Medieval Ireland,” compiled by Heather Rose Jones ( http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/irish100/ ). Ruadh is a descriptive byname meaning “read (hair or coloration). Usually the descriptive byname follows the given name, as cited in “Index of Names in Irish Annals: Masculine Descriptive Bynames,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan ( http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/DescriptiveBynames/ ). mac is the Irish Gaelic particle meaning “son of, forming a simple patronymic byname ( “Quick and Easy Gaelic Names,” Sharon Krossa, http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/ ). Colmáin is the genitive form of the masculine Middle Irish given name Colmán, dated 700-1200 AD, cited in “Index of Names in Irish Annals: Colmán,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan ( http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Colman.shtml ). The name would probably be a little more accurate if the diacritical were used in the byname. The client is most interested in the language/culture of the name (none given but strongly assume Irish) and doesn't care about the gender of the name. She will not accept Major changes to the name.
12. Yashka the Nomad: NEW ALTERNATE NAME, Icka the Goth, and NEW BADGE Or, a fox's mask between three leaves in pall inverted stems to center purpure and a bordure vert.
The primary persona name was registered July 2009. Icka is a 8th Century feminine Hispano-Gothic name found in Hispano-gotisches Namenbuch, J.M. Piel and D. Kremer (Heidelberg: Carl Winter Universita:tsverlag, 1976). It is cited in the Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 1928 ( http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi/1928.txt ). The same report notes that “In almost all records, Goths are identified by single given names alone, without any surname (Woolf, Henry Bosley, The Old Germanic Principles of Name-Giving (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press. 1939), ch. 14)). That would probably be the most typical way for a woman of that culture to identify herself, especially before the Muslim invasion.” and “a foreign writer might have referred to a Goth as "the Goth". We have found strong evidence that in Iberia after the fall of the Gothic kingdom, bynames with this meaning were used.”
It was noted in internal commentary that some internal detailing in the mask would improve its identifiability. The badge is clear of Nikodemus Mercator(reg. 10/2001 via Meridies), Or, an alligator's head couped close contourny purpure and a bordure vert.,with a CD for the type of primary and another for adding the secondaries, and similarly considering Richenza the Confused (reg. 12/1993 via the East), Or, an estoile pierced purpure within a bordure vert. I was assisted in the preparation of the Letter of Intent by Aryanhwy merch Catmael.
This letter contains 6 new names, 1 new name change, 1 new alternate name, 7 new devices, and 2 new badges. There is 1 device/badge exchange. This is a total of 18 items, 17 of them new.
