The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms.

Please note: Unless specifically stated, the submitter will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.

1. Ailis inghean Ui Nuallain: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, July 2009
Argent, a winged unicorn segreant azure and a base engrailed gules.

The name was registered July 2009.

The original submission, with the identical blazon, was returned by the CoA for a redraw. “While this depiction of a horse has become popular over the years, it is a very complicated drawing, especially with the forward-swept mane that protrudes from between the forelegs. Unfortunately, the added wings in this submission cause the beast to become unidentifiable from any distance, as both the tail and the mane are obscured. On resubmission, please instruct the submitter that the tail of a unicorn is supposed to be a lion's tail (a narrow cat-like tail with a tuft of fur at the very end), not a horse's.” The client has resubmitted a very clean, identifiable unicorn.

2. Alexsander Dachs: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, July 2009

Per chevron azure and vert, an open book Or between three compass roses argent.

The name was registered July 2009.

The original submission, with the identical blazon, was returned by the CoA for a redraw. “The first problem is that the book is not drawn as a book, it is drawn as a billet fesswise (rectangle) with internal artistic lines, and is not recognizable as a book. The second problem is that the field division is not a per chevron line, but is instead the bottom quarter of a per saltire line of division. A properly drawn per chevron line should rise well above the center of the field, nearly reaching the top of the field and dividing it into two sections of roughly the same area.” The client has made the necessary corrections.

3. David Ckarel: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, July 2009

Argent, a dragon's head cabossed azure, a bordure engrailed gules.

The name was registered July 2009.

The original submission, Argent, a dragon's head cabossed azure., was returned for conflict with the device of James Edward de Marksburry, Argent, a dragon's head erased contourny azure breathing flames gules. Adding the bordure clears the conflict.

This should be clear of Helen Jennet of Foxhall (06/1995, Atenveldt), Argent, a fox's mask within a bordure engrailed gules. If it's not clear by RfS X.2 Substantially Different Charges, RfS X.4 Significant Armorial Differences, should clear it with a CD for the change to the type primary charge and a CD for its tincture.

4. Giuliana Francesca Bellini: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, July 2009
Per saltire sable and vert, on a saltire Or a fox courant regardant proper bearing in its mouth a torteau.

The name was registered July 2009.

The original submission, Per saltire vert and sable, on a saltire Or a fox courant regardant proper bearing in its mouth a torteau.,was returned for conflict with the flag of Jamaica, Per saltire vert and sable, a saltire Or., with a single CD for the addition of the tertiary charge. Reversing the field tinctures provides the second CD.

5. Isemay of Whytby: NEW DEVICE

Per fess engrailed argent and azure, a reed pen fesswise sable and an escallop argent.

The name was registered October 2008.

6. Moire Ayres: NEW NAME and DEVICE

Quarterly Or and azure, in bend two frets couped vert.

Moire is cited as a feminine given name found in “Index of Names in Irish Annals: Mór,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan ( http://www.medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/Mor.shtml ), but while Mór has a very long run thoughout period, listed many, many times from 916 to 1599, except for one reference, the name is Mór; the one incidence of Moire is noted as this being the genitive (possessive) case of the name. Academy of S. Gabriel Report 2223 ( http://www.s-gabriel.org/2223 ) demonstrates the Irish Gaelic name Gille Mhoire or Gille Moire, which means “servant of Mary”, hence our seeing this element in period names; in this case it doesn't appear to be independent and the whole given name is made up of both parts < Gille + X >. Moire nic Greagair was registered without comment August 1999, but that was 10 years ago; those commenting were unable to establish a “beginning date” for the use of Moire as an independent given name.

More commonly registered has been Moira. Unfortunately, that appears to have been registerable as an SCA-compatible name, which is no longer allowed. Perhaps someone in the College of Arms might have some little-known but very important piece of documentation that demonstrates Moire as a period given name.

Ayres appears to be a Scottish surname (Black, p. 12, s.n. Air), but unfortunately, with a number of spelling variations listed there, Ayres is not among them. While not dated, Ayres is listed s.n. Ayer in Reaney and Wilson as an English surname; period spellings include Ayer, Air, Aer, de Are and Eyre. Maridonna provides documentation from British History Online dating this spelling to 1539 (accessed 10/27/09, http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=75903&strquery=Ayres , References to English Surnames in 1601 and 1602, F.K. & S. Hitching, Clearfield Pub.,1998, isbn 0806301813, p. XX, Book I (1601), Ayres in Birchington, Kent (K 10): RO 2. Pensions assigned to the late religious of Ambresbury priory, in Dec. 31 Hen. VIII., viz.:— Joan Darrell prioress...Cicily Ayres..." The client desires a feminine name and is more interested in the language/culture of the name. She will not accept Major changes to the name.

7. Tangwistel Corista: NEW DEVICE

Argent, a pink flamingo close proper and on a chief enarched vert two hedgehogs statant argent.

The name was registered June 2008.

The precedent which allows pink flamingos to be registered: In April 1985 (q.v., Cherie Ruadh MhicRath of Locksley) Laurel ruled, "The color of a flamingo's feathers is apparently dependent on its diet, so there really is no 'proper' color." This has been interpreted to mean that flamingos proper could not be registered; however, pink flamingos proper have been registered since that time, including as recently as April 2006. The 1985 precedent is hereby overturned; a pink flamingo proper is registerable. It is dark pink while the tincture of its beak and legs are treated as artistic license. Its tincture is a color, not a metal. [Marion Baggeputz, R-Calontir, 02/2007]
