This is the February 2015 Atenveldt Letter of Presentation; it precedes the Letter of Intent with submissions considered for the next Letter of Intent. Please have commentary to me by 20 February 2015.

Estrella War XXXI: This year's Heralds' Point will have an Heraldic Consultation Table Wednesday-Sunday, 25 February-1 March. Hours are 10 AM-5 PM Wednesday-Saturday and 10 AM-3 PM Sunday. Our usual Meet 'n' Greet (and swap stories and such) is Friday beginning at 7 PM; this is mostly a potluck, but we should be able to find something for folks to eat. Come and consult! Color! Schmooze! Work as long as you'd like! There will be at least one introductory heraldry class on Thursday at 10 AM at Heralds' Point (thank you, Honour!), and we can likely wedge in another class on Wenesday morning, too.

Eirnín Caomhanach (St. Felix): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Gules, a chevron embattled between two keys palewise wards to base outward and a man gardant kneeling contourny bearing a globe upon his shoulders argent.

The name is Gaelic. Both elements are found in “Irish Names and Surnames,” with Eirnín a masculine given name and the name of more than a dozen Irish saints (http://www.libraryireland.com/names/men/eirnin-ernin.php). Caomhanach is a “surname, the genitive form of the masculine given name Caomhán (http://www.libraryireland.com/names/men/caomhan-kevan.php). I'd like to find a more solid basis for the name, since the provided source doesn't use period construction for the name. The client desires a male name and will not accept Major changes to the name.

Gareth Llandfaelog (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Sable, a pall inverted and in sinister chief a rabbit rampant Or.

Gareth is the client's legal given name: Black Boar Pursuivant has seen his driver's license and attests to this. Llandefaelog is a locative surname found on the Domesday maps website (www.domesdaymaps.com/WPN-L.htm), likely meaning a church dedicated to Saint Maelog. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the sound of the name. He will not accept Major changes.

Gwyneth O Callaghan (BoA): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, May 2014

Argent, an ash-tree eradicated proper and on a chief azure a sun Or between an increscent and a decrescent argent.

The name was registered May 2014.

The original submission, Argent, an ash-tree eradicated proper issuant from base and on a chief azure a sun Or and a decrescent argent., was returned for the following reasons: “This device is returned for violating SENA A3E2, which states complexity of a design is "measured by adding the number of types of charges to the number of tinctures. Items with a complexity count of eight or less receive no penalty for complexity from this rule." Here we have four charges (tree, chief, sun, decrescent) and five tinctures (argent, vert, brown, azure, Or), for a total complexity count of nine. There is a pattern in late-period English armory of similar complexity, however all such patterns have three items on the chief, not two: a sun between two decrescents, or a decrescent between two suns, for example. With only two dissimilar charges in different tinctures on the chief, this does not come close enough to the period pattern to be registerable. Either adding a sun or a decrescent as mentioned here, or reducing the number of tinctures, would make this device less complex.” The client has followed the CoA's suggestion.

Argent, in pale a thistle and a boar passant proper, a bordure azure.

The name was registered January 2013 through the Outlands.

The original submission, Per saltire argent and vert, in pale a Cornish chough rising, maintaining in its feet a thistle, and a boar passant proper., was returned by Laurel for “violating SENA A3E2, which states complexity of a design is "measured by adding the number of types of charges to the number of tinctures. Items with a complexity count of eight or less receive no penalty for complexity from this rule." Here we have three charges (a Cornish chough, a thistle, and a boar) and six tinctures (argent, vert, sable, gules, purpure, brown), for a total complexity count of nine.” The design has been simplified.

Kára Hanadóttir (Tir Ysgithr): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, June 2012

Vert, a phoenix displayed head to sinister argent and a sinister gore ermine.

The name was registered June 2012.

The previous submission, Vert, in pale an arum lily held by an eagle's foot inverted erased and a gore sinister argent., was returned by Laurel: “

This device is returned for redraw, for violating section VII.7.a of the Rules for Submissions which requires that "Elements must be recognizable solely from their appearance." This is repeated in section A2C2 of the Standards for Evaluation which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." Commenters found the eagle's foot here difficult to identify, both due to its being inverted, and by the unusual way in which it is holding the arum lily. The erasing of the foot is also too small to properly identify.” This is a redesign. It is clear of Morwenna Ælflæd o'r Glyn: Sable, a hedgehog statant argent and a sinister gore ermine., with 1 DC for the field and 1 DC for the primary charge.

Mineko of Twin Moons (Twin Moons): NEW BADGE

(fieldless) A domestic cat sejant affronty with the sinister paw raised argent.

The name was registered June 2011.

Mineko of Twin Moons and Irina Dionisiya Tolochkova (Twin Moons): NEW HOUSEHOLD NAME, Societate Sine Nomine, and NEW BADGE

(Fieldless): A snake with a head at both ends nowed in a Cavendish knot argent.

The names were registered June 2011 and August 1999, respectively.

The name is Latin, “Society without a name.” Societate nodi, an Italian Secular Order from the 14^th C, means Society of the Knot in Italian/Latin (“Medieval Secular Order Names: Courtly Orders and Awards,” Juliana de Luna, http://medievalscotland.org/jes/OrderNames/Courtly_Orders_and_Awards.shtml). The phrase Sine Nomine, “without a name,” is seen in a Missa Sine Nomine, the musical accompaniment for the Mass without specific, previously-composed music, often from the late 15^th through the 16^th C. The patronymic form is Ulfsdottir, “A Simple Guide to Creating Old Norse Names,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/sg-viking.html. Diacritical marks can be uniformly used or dropped. The locative uses the Branch Name Allowance in SENA B.2.f.; the name for the the Canton of Aschehyrst was registered June 1994 in the East Kingdom. The client desires a female name and if most interested in the meaning and language/culture of the name. She asks that it is made authentic for the Viking period Norse or Irish. She will not accept Major changes to the name.
