Letter of Intent

Unto Juliana Laurel; Alys Pelican; Cormac Wreath; and the commenting Members of the College of Arms,

Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!

The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms. Unless specifically stated, the client will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.

1. Ambré Renée de Passais: NEW DEVICE
Argent, a sun gules eclipsed Or, on a chief azure three mullets of seven points argent.

The name was registered November 2018.

Considering the eclipsed sun as a sun + roundel still brings the complexity count or tinctures + charges to eight, which is acceptable.

2. Dawn Greenwall: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, November 2018

Per fess Or and vert masoned Or, a demi-sun issuant from the line of division gules, a chief purpure.

The name was registered June 2014.

The previous submission, Per fess gyronny of 26 from the fess point Or and gules and vert masoned Or., was “returned for dividing the field into too many gyrons. In the June 1999 LoAR, it was ruled, "The question was raised regarding whether gyronny of sixteen is period, and whether it can be used in the SCA. Papworth's Ordinary of British Armorials, cites an instance from the 12th century, and Martin Schrot's Wappenbuch, a heraldic treatise shows a 16th century example. Additionally, the LoI mentions a 13th century example. Given this, we will register Gyronny of sixteen in simple cases, but nothing more, barring period evidence." This device goes beyond sixteen gyrons, and without documentation is unregisterable.” This is a redesign.

3. Eoin Ó Seachnasaigh: NEW DEVICE CHANGE

Sable, a bend sinister vert fimbriated and in dexter chief a stag salient argent.

The name was registered December 2010.

If registered, the client asks that his currently-registered device, Sable, a bend sinister vert fimbriated and in dexter chief a Celtic cross argent., registered in December 2010, be maintained as a badge.

4. Eoin the Steward: NEW DEVICE CHANGE, from Argent, on a hurt a cross couped argent, a base sable., registered June 2015.

Argent, on a hurt a cross couped argent, a bordure embattled sable.

The name was registered July 2009.

If registered, the client wishes to release his currently-registered device.

5. Hrafn Vargr: NEW NAME and DEVICE

Per bend sinister vert and argent, a wolf rampant contourny argent and a raven contourny sable.

Hrafn is an Old Norse male given name (“Viking Names found in Landnámabók,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/landnamabok.html).
The byname Vargr, “wolf,” (also a “thief, robber, miscreant”) is found in A Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic, Geir T. Zoëga, Oxford, 1910, https://archive.org/details/concisedictionar001857/page/n6. This is a more search-friendly site: http://norse.ulver.com/dct/zoega/v.html.

The client desires a male name and if most interested in the land/culture of the name (11th-12^th C. Norway); he would like it to be authentic for Norwegian (language and/or culture).

6. Jon Blackfish: NEW NAME and DEVICE

Per bend sinister Or and sable, a lucy haurient embowed contourny and a Maltese cross counterchanged.

Jon is an English male given name, seen as Jon Willbornne, buried London, England, 02 Nov 1590, Batch: B00047-6, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JC96-NPN.
The byname is coined. “English Sign Names,” Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/inn/) shows <color + animal> names (unfortunately, there's none specifically using the terms black and fish) and only black as an element (Black Boye). Blaklambe (black +lamb) is dated to 1348 for Will. Blaklamb (Studies on Middle English Nicknames I. Compounds, Jan Jönsjö, p. 57); Grenefissh (green + fish, one who sells unsalted fish) is dated to 1332 for Will. Grenefissh (ibid., p. 104); others are Hardfyshse, 1379 (one who sells hard/dried and salted fish) and Pourfish, 1332 (one who sells bad fish). A number of other Black-/Blak- surnames are found, often referring to articles of clothing (Blakhat, Blackmantel) or physical attributes (Blackbeard, Blakelok) .

The client desires as male name.

7. Kára Refsdóttir: NEW NAME and DEVICE

Argent, a fox passant proper within a wreath of holly leaves vert fructed gules.

The name is Old Norse. Kára is a female given name found in “The Old Norse Name,” Geirr Bassi Haraldsson, p. 12. Refr is a male given name (ibid., p. 7). A name ending in -r will change to -s when used as a patronymic (ibid., p. 17). The client desires a female name.

8. Kim Dae Hae: NAME RESUBMISSION from William of Atenveldt/Kim Samguk
Submitted as Kim Senggum in the December 2018 Atenveldt LoI (itself a resubmission of the holding name William of Atenveldt, registered as a holding name in August 2018), the client wishes to withdraw Kim Senggum and submit this instead.
Kim, "gold," is a family name of a group that rose to power and became the rulers of Silla for seven centuries (https://www.britannica.com/story/why-are-so-many-koreans-named-kim). The name is not considered presumptuous, as the clan was so huge that it remains the most common family name in Korea today.
Wang Hae was ruler of Korea 1109–1146, during the Goryeo Dynasty (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_tree_of_the_Goryeo_kings).
Dae Inseon was ruler of Korea 906-926, the last ruler of Balhae. Balhae (698–926 CE), also known as Bohai, was a multi-ethnic kingdom in Manchuria and Korean peninsula and the Russian Far East. It was established by refugees from the Korean kingdom of Goguryeo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balhae). Behind the Name (https://www.behindthename.com/element/da11) says that this is a “reading of” a Chinese character meaning “high, vast, great, big”.
While this gives an approximation of the time the names were used, I have no idea how the names are constructed, if there are particular elements for names, if there are genders for specific elements, or if elements in Korean “mean” anything.

9. Moire Fhionn inghean Uí Raghallaigh: NEW DEVICE

Sable, three crescents conjoined in pall horns outward, a bordure Or.

The name was registered August 2013.

10. Orrin Darius: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, November 2018

Sable, two serpents nowed in a Bourchier knot, that to dexter Or and that to sinister inverted argent, in base a triquetra inverted argent.

The name was registered August 2018.

The previous submission, Sable, two serpents nowed in a Bourchier knot, that to dexter Or and that to sinister inverted argent., was returned for “conflict with the badge of Bourchier (important non-SCA armory), (Tinctureless) A Bourchier knot. There is one DC for the field, but no difference granted for the presence of the serpents' heads.”

11. Thora Gyldir: NEW NAME
The name is Old Norse. Thora (as Þóra) is a female given name in “Viking Names found in Landnámabók,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/landnamabok.html. Gyldir is a byname, “howler, wolf”, in “Viking Bynames found in the Landnámabók,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html. It is correct as gylðir. The client will be informed of this. The client doesn't care about the gender of the name; she is more interested in the meaning and language/culture of the name (“wolf/fighter,” Nordic).
