Unto Their Royal Majesties Brian and Lia; Baron Tymothy Smythson, Aten Principal Herald; the Heralds in the Atenveldt College of Heralds; and to All Whom These Presents Come, Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!
This is the April 2015 Atenveldt Letter of Presentation; it precedes the Letter of Intent with submissions considered for the next Letter of Intent. Please have commentary to me by 20 April 2015.
Heraldry Hut: The April Heraldry Hut will be held Friday, 17 April, beginning at 7:30 PM. Please contact me for location.
Estrella War XXXI: Hurrah! Wonderful weather (that kept us guessing), a slightly different location, and Great Heralds and Clients – what's not to love about the Heralds' Point Consultation Table? Many thanks are extended to a modest-in-number-yet-amazing-in-dedication to those who spent much of their time in consultation. Most submissions came from Atenveldt, future submitters came from a number of Kingdoms, and those consulting them came across a number of borders. I recommend with praise Symond Bayard le Gris, Herald's Point coordinator/manager; Finngall McKetterick Matilda Stolja, Red Tree Pursuivant (Madone) from An Tir; Eridana Ambra Dragotta (Ambre P.) from Caid; Warenus de Fulmere (I hope from Nahrun Kabirun and the loaner of its heraldic library) from the Outlands; and our own kind – Sorcha inghen Chon Mhara (Prism P.), Honour Grenehart, Roger von Allenstein, Séamus mac Ríáin (Black Boar P.) and Symond Bayard.
Please consider the following submissions for the April 2015 Letter of Intent:
William Devlin (Granite Mountain): NEW DEVICE Per chevron sable and Or, an owl affronty counterchanged. The name appears in the March 2015 Atenveldt LoI.
Xanthias Alexandros Casca of Monster Hall (Twin Moons): NEW NAME and DEVICE Azure, a spear and a bordure embattled argent. Xanthias is the name of several characters in Aristophanes' play, The Frogs. Alexandros Casca are elements of his father's registered SCA name, Matthias Alexander Casca. Of Monster Hall is an element of his mother's registered SCA name, Melissa of Monster Hall. Both parents have signed Permission to Claim Relationhip and with Melissa, for Attesting Legal Relationship with Xanthias, their son. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the language/culture of the name (showing the lineage elements, Alexandros Casca of Monster Hall). He will not accept Major Changes to the name. The embattled edge should be deeper.
The following submissions appear in the February 2015 Letter of Intent: Complete commentary can be found at the OSCAR website, specifically https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=100&loi=3078. This is abbreviated commentary. I was assisted in the preparation of this Letter of Intent by Magnus von Lübeck, Michael Gerard Curtememoire, Maridonna Benvenuti, Seamus mac Riain, Song Zidie and Taran the Wayward.

Mineko of Twin Moons and Irina Dionisiya Tolochkova: NEW HOUSEHOLD NAME, Societate Sine Nomine, and NEW BADGE: (Fieldless): A snake with a head at both ends nowed in a Cavendish knot argent.

This is abbreviated commentary. I was assisted in the preparation of this Letter of Intent by Alys Mackyntoich, Andreas von Meißen, Basil Dragonstrike, ffride wlffsdotter, Gawain of Miskbridge, Caoimhin McKee, Christian Jorgensen af Hilsonger, Illuminada Eugenia de Guadalupe y Godoy, Magnus von Lübeck, Maridonna Benvenuti, Rohese de Dinan, Seamus mac Riain and Vettorio Antonello. Not all submissions accepted at Estrella's Consultation Table appear here, for potential conflicts, name questions, and the like. I'm contacting “the rest of the clients” to clear up questions and such, and I hope that these submissions will appear in the April 2015 LoI.
Agnes Carrick: NEW NAME
Aileann inghean Conall: NEW NAME Submitted as Conall, the client asks that the name be lenited correctly, and the Old Irish Gaelic (c 700-c 900) genitive form for the masculine given name Conall is Conaill; the name is found throughout period (“Index of Names in Irish Annals: Conall,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Conall.shtml). Blue Tyger suggests that the lenition should be Chonaill. (It seems T and C leniteprior to 1200 AD.) It seems that the particle is ingen in names before 1200 AD (“Quick and Easy Gaelic Names,” 3rd edition,Sharon L. Krossa, http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/#spelling).
Ailric Atte Grange: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per pale embattled sable and argent, a hare and a squirrel combattant counterchanged. It's most likely more correct if the particle is spelled atte, as R&W do not capitalize the preposition.
al-Haddad ibn `Abd al-Jabbār: NEW NAME and DEVICE Sable, a bend sinister embattled between a mouse rampant contourny and an increscent Or.
Alkibiades Attikou Argeios: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Vert, a turtle rampant argent and in chief three goblets Or each entwined with a serpent argent. Alcibiades
was a famous Greek general (450 BC-404 BC), but Alkibades was not.
(It seems the client misspelled it and had originally thought of the
soldier's name,
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/13306/Alcibiades
.) The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names (LGPN),
http://www.lgpn.ox.ac.uk/names/practices.html,
has several hundred instances of the given male name Attikos,
and the patronymic form for that is Attikou,
putting it into the genitive case. Someone from Argos would be called
Argeios.
It can be found via Google Books in "A Greek-English Lexicon:
Based on the German Work of Francis Passow, Part 1" by Liddel
and Scott
(https://books.google.com/books?id=kFNFAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=liddell+and+scott&hl=en&sa=X&e
i=Jtf_VJ6nJNPSoATykYCoAg&ved=0CDIQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=liddell%20and%20scott&f=false),
p. 203, first column. [Thanks to Seamus mac Riain, Black Boar Pursuivant, for working on this (I figured with his current enrollment in Classical Greek, he knew I'd be after him): he has also contacted the client and he is fine with his first name being Alkibiades.] A few commenters had difficulty identifying the serpents wrapped around the goblets.
Alpin Hunter: NEW NAME
Aoibhenn inghean Ui Maille: NEW NAME Since this element is pre-1200, the proper patronymic marker is ingen, rather than inghean.
Archibald Henderson: NEW NAME

Bergdís Berbeinn: NEW NAME

Garth MacPhail: NEW DEVICE: Per chevron sable and gules, a clenched hand sustaining a quill pen, on a chief argent, the words “Manu Forti cum Verba” sable. Rifling through my old Latin text from high school, this might be more correct as Verbis. The client is a writer, and this is an interpretation of the pen being mightier than the sword. Any assistance with the grammar is appreciated.

Theodora Akropolitina: NEW NAME Akropolites was a 13th C. scholar, found in “A Short (and rough) Guide to Byzantine Names for SCA Personae,” Hrolf Herjolfsson, http://ynysfawr.lochac.sca.org/files/pdf/Byzantine-Names.pdf. That source uses -a or -ina to feminize a family name. However, in Bardas' article, family names ending in -tes be femininized as -tissa, hence Akropolitissa, which is given as an example (http://heraldry.sca.org/names/byzantine/feminizing.html#feminizing_family_names). This might be more accurate, as Theodora is dated to the 9th C. This form is corroborated as Akropolitissa in” Prosopography of the Byzantine World: the second name Akropolites list shows Maria Akropolitissa, XI century, person number Maria 20122, Permalink: http://db.pbw.kcl.ac.uk/pbw2011/entity/person/154467

The following submissions were returned by the College of Arms for further work, February 2015: Antoinette Marie. Name. Section IIIA10 of the Admin Handbook states: No name will be registered to a submitter if it is identical to a name used by the submitter for purposes of identification outside of a Society context. This includes legal names, common use names, trademarks, and other items registered with mundane authorities that serve to identify an individual or group. Precedent states that, "In the case of this submission, the submitted name Mari Alexander contains the first two names of the submitter's legal name. Therefore, it is in conflict with Mari Alexander, a legitimate use name derived from her legal name of Mari Alexander [surname], and must be returned [Mari Alexander, September 2002, R-West]." The submission has the same problem. Antoinette Marie is a legitimate use name derived from the submitter's legal name, and must be returned. Commenters also questioned whether this name was presumptuous due to the similarity of the name to that of the historical Marie Antoinette. We allow references to famous people, as long as there is not presumption, a claim to be or to be related to that person who is important enough to protect. Although we agree that the French queen is worthy of protection, she has never been known by the submitted name. Therefore, this name is not presumptuous. Her device has been registered under the holding name Antoinette of Granholme.
Marceau de Valcourt. Household name Mirthful Grand Alliance of Mead and Drum. The Letter of Intent did not demonstration that this household name was constructed in a period manner. For example, no evidence was provided to support the use of adjectives like Mirthful to describe groups of people or to modify designators, or that a phrase like Grand Alliance could be used as a designator. Mead is not a heraldic charge. Therefore, this name does not follow the pattern of an inn-sign derived from the names of two different charges. We would interpret Mead and Drum as bynames, but we do not have evidence to support the pattern [designator] of [surname] and [surname]. Without such documentation, this household name cannot be registered.
Sundragon, Barony of. Order name Order of the Dragon and the Fireside and badge. Per pale rayonny sable and Or, in dexter base a flame proper. This order name is returned for lack of evidence that Fireside is a plausible heraldic charge. Therefore, the pattern of Order of the X and Y, where X and Y are both heraldic charges, cannot be used. Without further documentation, this order name cannot be registered. This badge is returned for conflict with the device of William of Sark: Sable, a flame proper. There is only one DC for changing the field. The proper flame in the submitted badge cannot be partially on the Or half of the field because it is partially Or, and thus it is forced to move. Therefore, no DC is granted for the difference in position.
Yehoshua ben Abraam. Device. Or, two pea-vines fructed and entwined about a stake, on a chief vert three stars of David Or. This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2 which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." Many commenters were unable to identify the stake as an element independent from the plant.
