Unto Gabriel Laurel; Juliana Pelican; Emma Wreath; and the commenting Members of the College of Arms, Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!
The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms. Unless specifically stated, the submitter will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.
1. Belle Cerise: NEW NAME and DEVICE Gules, on a bend cotised argent a branch of cherry blossoms throughout proper.
Belle is a female French given name, found in “An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris,” Colm Dubh, http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/paris.html#B. Belle is also found as a female English given name dated to 1279 in “Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames: Bele,” Talan Gwynek, http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/reaney/reaney.cgi?Bele. The byname Cerise was registered October 2005 to Cécille Cerise of Cherybeare without comment. Documentation for the byname provided by Shauna Laurel Archivist shows that the documentation provided comes from Dauzat, pg. 96: under Cérié states: (Lanquedoc forme régionale) Cerisier n. d'arble caractéristique du domaine. - cerise, cerise doit désigner plus spéccialement un producteur au vendeur de cerises. (trans. regional language form, cherry tree, noun characteristic of domain/area - designate _ specialty a producer or vendor of cherries.) The client desires a female name and is most interested in the meaning of the name. Language is not important as long as Cerise or a very close form of it can be maintained.
Although the very popular “cherry blossom” and “cherry tree,” the ones gifted to many modern countries by Japan, is found in the Far East, the edible cherry was known in Europe since classical Greek and Roman times ( http://cahnrs-cms.wsu.edu/sweetcherryresearch/about/history/Pages/default.aspx ).
2. Cécile de Brétigny : RELEASE OWNERSHIP OF JOINT BADGE The name was registered September 2005.
The client releases her portion of the jointly-registered badge, Per pale indented azure and argent, a wolf argent and a unicorn gules combatant, both gorged and chained Or., to Vallaulfr Rurikson for his sole ownership. This joint badge was registered May 2007.
3. Donngal de Buchanan: NEW BADGE Vert, a raven volant bendwise within a bordure engrailed Or charged charged in chief with the phrase "We do it because" and in base with "we can" sable.
The name was registered December 2003.
Most of the commentary in-kingdom was supplied by Gunnvor: This is probably based on the bird found on the 924 Anlaf Sihtricsson penny, which many people misidentify as a raven because on the back of the coin is a banner that folks want to associate with the infamous Raven Banner. The problem is that, in Viking Age art as well as real life, ravens have heavy, straight bills, while eagles are depicted with hooked beaks. As depicted, this must be an eagle or hawk...If you didn't specify this arrangement exactly [of the motto on the bordure] I'd have stretched the text to read clockwise around the entire border, tops of the letters pointing out, beginning with "We" in dexter chief...
This should be clear of Vert, three bendlets and a swallow volant bendwise argent. [Caitilín inghean Chormaic, LOAR 12/2009]; Vert, an eagle Or and a bordure Or pellety. [Egil Haraldsson, LOAR 10/2003] and; Vert, a falcon displayed Or, charged upon the breast with a trefoil vert, within a bordure engrailed argent. [Ceinwen Haele Cynwyth, LOAR 11/1984]
4. Edric the Unsteady: BLANKET PERMISSION TO CONFLICT The client provides signed paperwork for Blanket Permission to Conflict: Edric the Unsteady (primary persona name, registered March 1982 ); Argent, a lymphad sails furled & oars in action sable, pennoned and in dexter chief an estoile gules, all within a bordure sable.( device, registered March 1982); Argent, an estoile gyronny of six gules and sable within a bordure sable.(badge, registered March 1982) Argent, a cross conjoined to a bend sinister within a bordure gules. (badge, registered January 1983); and Vert, a cockatrice erect maintaining in its upraised dexter claw a needle palewise, point to chief, within a bordure engrailed Or.(badge, registered June 1987)
5. Erik the Relentless: BLANKET PERMISSION TO CONFLICT Purpure chapé ployé, a standing seraph argent.
The name and device were registered March 2001. The client permits any future submitter to register armory that is at least one countable step different from his registered armory.
6. Jocelyn Payndeamours: NEW NAME Jocelyn is a male English name dated to 1199 with the spelling Jocelin (Withycombe, 3rd edition, pp. 177-178 s.n. Jocelyn). The Suffolk Feet of Fines (http://archive.org/details/cu31924029784992) dates <Robert de broc v. Jocelyn of All Saints in Cheventon> to 4-5 John (~1203-04). Playndeamours is an English surname dated to 1284 in Reaney and Wilson, 3rd edition, p. 48 s.n. Blandamore. The client is most interested in the sound of the name and doesn't care about its gender.
7. Johann der Becker von Aschersleben: NEW DEVICE Vert, semy of annulets Or, three garbs one and two argent.
The name was registered July 2011.
This is clear of Medh ingend Muiredaich: Vert, three garbs argent., and Xena Baxter Wynthorpe, Vert, in pale three garbs one and two and a stag's head cabossed proper maintaining and issuant from between the attires a Latin cross, a bordure Or.
It will be suggested to the client/artist that the annulets be rendered the same size.
8. Raylene of the Whispering Woods: BLANKET PERMISSION TO CONFLICT On behalf of his wife, Raylene of the Whispering Woods (deceased 23 February 1996), Edric the Unsteady provides signed paperwork for Blanket Permission to Conflict: Raylene of the Whispering Woods (primary persona name, registered July 1986); and Per bend vert and argent, a bend engrailed between a hare salient and two frogs sejant, a bordure engrailed, all counterchanged (device, registered July 1986).
9. Sveinbiǫrn Hallbiǫrnson: NEW NAME The name elements are Old Norse. Sveinbiǫrn and Hallbiǫrn are male given names, both found in “Viking Names found in Landnámabók,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/landnamabok.html. According to Geirr Bassi Haraldsson's “The Old Norse Name,” men's given names in -biǫrn make their genitives in -bjarnar (p. 18), so that the patronymic becomes Hallbjarnarson, not Hallbiǫrnson. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the language/culture of the name (none given, but ON/Viking is strongly suspected via correspondence). He will not accept Major changes to the name. However, upon further consultation with the client, he'd prefer maintaining the byname as close to Hallbiǫrnson as possible, taking Hallbjarnarson only as a distant second choice. (Sound of the name seems important.) Institutet för språk och folkminnen/SMP http://www.sofi.se/5187 (Biornsson, Biornsdottir) demonstrates Magnus Biornson 1344 and Olauo Biørnsson de Ordhambre 1351 as Swedish patronymic bynames. We offer Hallbiornsson or Hallbiørnsson as a reasonable construction, based on these attested names. I am sure diacritical marks can be dealt with as necessary to register the name as close to the submitted form as possible.
10. Victoria of the Vales of Barnsdale: AUGMENTATION RESUBMISSION from Laurel, August 2011 Or, an insect-winged naked woman passant, wings chased, azure, and as an augmentation on a canton sable in pale a coronet and a sunburst Or, clouded argent.
The name and device were registered March 1981. The client is a Viscountess of the Sun (12 April 1980) and has served as the Baroness of Tir Ysgithr (2 September 1995), allowing her to display a coronet. She received the Augmentation of Arms 9 January 1993.
The previous submission, Or, an insect-winged naked woman passant, wings chased, azure, and as an augmentation on a canton azure in pale a coronet and a sun in his glory within an orle Or., was returned for the augmentation being in conflict with device of AEthelinda Longa, Azure, in pale a seax fesswise inverted reversed and an escallop, within an orle Or; there is one CD for the change of type of primary charges, but as AEthelinda's device has more than two types of charges on the field, it is not simple and can not be cleared by substantial difference of the primary charge group using Section X.2 of the Rules for Submissions. Although the Kingdom of Atenveldt does have a registered augmentation of arms, she would prefer not to use it.
This letter contains 3 new names, 2 new devices and 1 new badge. There is 1 Augmentation of Arms resubmission, 1 Release of Ownership and 8 Blanket Permissions to conflict. This is a total of 16 actions, 6 of them new.
I was assisted in the preparation of the Letter of Intent by Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Gunnvor silfraharr and Taran the Wayward.
Thank you again for your great indulgence and patience, your expertise and your willingness to share it.
