Unto Gabriel Laurel; Juliana Pelican; Emma Wreath; and the commenting Members of the College of Ar Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!
The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms. Unless specifically stated, the submitter will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.
1. Aonghas Mac Faoláin: NEW NAME and DEVICE Per pale and per chevron sable and Or, three bull's heads cabossed counterchanged.
Aonghas is the Gaelic form of Angus, according to Black's The Surnames of Scotland, pp. 23-4 s.n. Angus. This spelling was registered to Aonghas of Rannachmoor February 2006. The documentation for that name was given as being in "Scottish Gaelic Given Names" Sharon L. Krossa, http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/gaelicgiven/ as Aonghus in the 14th-16th centuries. Faoláin is the genitive form of an Early Modern Irish Gaelic male name (nominative is Faolán), in “ Early Modern Irish Gaelic (c1200-c1700) genitive form: Faoláin in “Index of Names in Irish Annals: Fáelán / Faolán,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Faelan.shtml. The client wants a male name and is most interested in the language/culture of the name; he would like it authentic for the 15th C. He will not accept Major changes to the name.
This appears to be clear of Aengus MacPharlain (registered 10/1995 via Atlantia). The only difference is ahr vs. eh in the second syllable of the byname. PN.3.C.1. doesn't apply because only one syllable has changed; PN.3.C.3 doesn't apply since no single-syllable element has changed. PN.3.C.2 Substantial Change to One Syllable says "Two names are also substantially different if a syllable is substantially changed in sound and appearance. This means that the vowel and the consonant (or group of consonants) on one side of the vowel is different between the two names. In either case, the change in spelling (including addition or removal of letters) must affect at least two letters in that syllable to be substantial." Here, both the vowel and the consonant have changed, and in comparing <Phar> vs. <Fao>, two (or more) letters have been changed. Óengus ua Faeláin registered in September of 2004 (via the Outlands). This submission is also clear by PN.3.C.2: "Substantial Change to One Syllable: Names are substantially different if a single syllable between them (excluding articles and prepositions, such as de and the) is changed in both sound and appearance as described here...Two names are also substantially different if a syllable is substantially changed in sound and appearance. This means that the vowel and the consonant (or group of consonants) on one side of the vowel is different between the two names. In either case, the change in spelling (including addition or removal of letters) must affect at least two letters in that syllable to be substantial."
The line of division is a bit low, but I think it is reasonable; the client will be told that it can be “bumped up” a little.
2. Arthur O'Flaherty: TRANSFER OF BADGE Or, on a sun gules a dragon contourny argent, a bordure gules. The client provides a letter of transfer for the badge, registered July 2011, to the Barony of Sundragon.
3. Caitríona inghean Fhaoláin mhic Gearóid: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, January 2012 Per bend sinister engrailed gules and azure, a serpent nowed Or and a rapier bendwise sinister argent.
The name was registered January 2012.
The original device submission, Or, an oak tree eradicated and fructed proper within an orle per pale azure and purpure., was returned for conflict with the device of Orlando dei Medici, Or, a crequier vert.; there is a CD for the addition of the orle, but no difference is granted between a crequier and an oak tree. This is a complete redesign.
4. Ered Sûl, Barony of: NEW ORDER NAME, Order of the Gilded Annulet, and BADGE Azure, on a mountain of three peaks vert, fimbriated and snow-capped argent, an annulet Or.
The branch name was registered/corrected March 1999. The pattern of the Order name follows that of similar Baronial Orders, including the Gilded Heart and the Gilded Shield (both registered April 1999). Gilded, “overlaid wholly or in parts with a thin coating of gold,” is dated to c. 1596. An annulet, “a little ring,” is dated to c. 1602 with this spelling; as “a small circle worn as a charge in coats of arms,” it is dated to 1610 with this particular spelling. (both in COED)
The design of the badge follows that seen in the arms of the Barony, Azure, in base three mountain peaks vert, fimbriated and snow-capped argent, in canton a laurel wreath argent.; its badge, Azure, a mountain of three peaks issuant from base vert, fimbriated and snowcapped argent.; and all of its Order badges, with the charges in base including a lily Or, a heart Or, a mullet Or, an escutcheon Or and most recently, a torch Or.
5. Heinrekr hinn þormóði: NEW NAME and DEVICE Ermine, a boar rampant within an orle gules.
The name is Old Norse. Heinrekr is a male given name found on the Viking Answer Lady's website, www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONMensNames.shtml ; it is seen on p. 11 of Geirr Bassi's “The Old Norse Name” as well. The byname means “the bold”and is a descriptive byname found on “The Bynames of the Viking Age Runic Inscriptions,” http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/lindorm/runicbynames/mental.htm#start. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the sound of the name.

The name is English. Sanchia is a female given name dated to 1243 in Withycombe, 3rd edition, p. 263 s.n. Sanchia. Allain is an English surname; while undated, Alain is dated to c. 1246 (Reaney and Wilson, 3rd edition, p. 7 s.n. Allain). It was eventually found in IGI Parish Records (extracted) as a period surname, with Christofer Allain, Male, Marriage, 31 Aug 1572, Polstead, Suffolk, England, Batch M06302-2 (thanks to Magnus von Lübeck!). The client desires a female name and is most interested in the sound of the name.

8. Thora Thumb Dragon: NEW NAME The name is English, and all elements are found in Reaney and Wilson, 3rd edition. Thora is a female given name; Thora filia Gamel is dated to 1210, p. 44 Dragon is dated with this spelling to 1221, p. 141 s.n. Dragon. Thumb is a surname, dated with this spelling to 1232, p. 445 s.n. Thum. The client desires a feminine name. She wishes the name to be authentic for time period (Viking).
Unfortunately, the closest we could come in documenting all presented elements was in English. Gunnvor offered some possibilities in internal commentary that would make the name more consistent with Viking culture, but I have been unable to contact the client with these options and so am sending it forward as is.
There are 4 New Names, 1 New Order Name, 3 New Devices and 1 New Badge. There is 1 Device resubmission, 1 Transfer, and 1 Acceptance of Transfer. This is a total of 12 items, 9 of which are new.
