ATENVELDT COLLEGE OF HERALDS Letter of Intent 20 September 2016, A.S. LI
Unto Andrewe Laurel; Lillia Pelican; Brunissende Wreath; and the commenting Members of the College of Arms, Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!
The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms. Unless specifically stated, the client will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.
The name was registered May 1992.
The original submission, Per fess argent and sable, four pallets issuant from the line of division gules and a cubit arm issuant from base argent., returned for violating SENA A3D2b which states "... a single charge group may not mix ordinaries with non-ordinaries... ". Because the pallets and arm are on each side of the line of division, they can only be understood as belonging to the same primary charge group. We [the College of Arms] note that Per fess paly argent and gules and sable would be an acceptable divided field.” The resubmission of the badge reflects this.
2. Eric the Bald: NEW DEVICE CHANGE Per pale azure and sable, two bear paw prints argent.
The name was registered October 2000. If this is registered, his current device, Sable, a sledge hammer argent within a bordure rayonny Or., should be retained as a badge.
The original device, Per bend sinister indented gules and purpure, a threaded needle bendwise sinister and a natural leopard's head cabossed Or., as returned for “violating SENA A3D2c, Unity of Posture and Orientation, which states "The charges within a charge group should be in either identical postures/orientations or an arrangement that includes posture/orientation" The charges here are not in a unified arrangement, as the needle is bendwise sinister and the leopard's head in its default orientation.” The problem has been remedied by putting the needle in its default position.
4. Mercurio da Spin: DEVICE RESUBMSSION from Laurel, June 2014 Gyronny arrondi azure and ermine, a rapier and a comet in saltire Or.
The name was registered June 2014. The original device submission, Per saltire sable and argent, four bats counterchanged., was returned for conflict; this is a complete redesign.
5. Millicent Couture: NEW NAME Millicent is found as an English name in the marriage record for Millicent Porter, married 20 Oct 1566 at Ingoldsby, Lincoln, England, Batch M02938-3 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NVJF-65P). Couture is found as a christening name for Elye Couture, 18 Feb 1617, Walloon or Strangers Church, Canterbury, Kent, England, Batch C04902-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5JX-HR7). The client cares most about the meaning of the name and would like it authentic for a French persona (the name does appear in familyseach.org as a French name, but only as community-contributed, not community-indexed.)
6. Natasiia Novgorodova: NAME CHANGE RESUBMISSION from July 2016 Atenveldt LoI, and NEW DEVICE CHANGE Per bend argent and gules, a swan rousant sable and a sword inverted Or.
The client has asked that her new name change (Natasiia of Nyenskans), appearing in the July 2016 LoI be withdrawn, and she wishes to submit this instead. The name is Russian. Natasiia is a female diminutive (13th-14th C.) of the given name Anastasia (A Dictionary of Period Russian Names, Paul Wickenden of Thanet).
Novgorod
was a major city of the Kievan Rus. The focal point of the city is
the Detinets, or the Kremlin. It was mentioned first in the
chronicles in the entry for 1044. In that year, ramparts with
traditional wooden framework constructions were built on the site of

If the new name is registered, the current name Mariyah al-Madiniyah should be retained as an alternate. If the new device change is registered, the current device, Per pale azure and Or, a crescent and between its horns a mullet of four points all counterchanged., should be retained as a badge.
7. Rachel Phythien of Sons of Scotia: NEW NAME and DEVICE Purpure, in chief a cross formy between flaunches argent.
Rachel is the client's legal given name. Rachel is a female given name dated to 1629 in a marriage that occurred in Rochester, Stafford, England, Batch M01008-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N21F-DMJ). Her legal surname is Phethean, and she wishes her SCA name to be close to that. Thomas Phitheon is dated to 1602 as a christening date in Holy Trinity in the Minories, London, London, England, Batch P01553-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5NK-F7K), while Phythien is dated 1250-1350 for Will Phythien in the village of Barnwell, in WH Hart and PA Lyon's Carularium Monasterii de Rameseia, Vol. III London; HMSO (Phethean Family History, www.phethean.org.uk/surname-history/early-surnames/). Assuming that the name submission were Rachel Phythien alone, would this be too close to her legal name of Rachel Phethean (a single letter difference, and what is likely to be identical pronunciation)? This is a non-issue if the byname can be registered.
I
found no reference for the Sons
of Scotia,
other than it is a household (headed by her husband) in the Barony of
Atenveldt, a Commandery of
Hospitallers.

mentions on p. 508 a Thomas de
Scotia. The Latin
Scotia
began to appear 9 C. as the name for the region of Scotland,
replacing older Caledonia,
also named for the inhabitants at the time, whose name likewise is of
unknown origin (Online
Etymological Dictionary,
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?allowed_in_frame=0&search=Scotia).
SENA Appendix A says late-period English can have double given names,
and given+byname+loc ative. If this construction isn't likely, perhaps something can be found as a Household or Association Name (NPN.1.B.3) individuals which uses the term Sons of. (It seems most likely that she'd prefer this as a Household/Group name, as Sons Scotia is used as an unregistered household name by her husband.) The client desires a female name and is most interested in the sound and spelling of the name.
There are 2 New Names, 1 New Name Change, 1 New Device, 2 New Device Changes. These 6 items are chargeable, Laurel should receive $24 for them. There are 2 Device Resubmission and 1 Badge Resubmission. These 3 items are not chargeable. There are a total of 9 items submitted on this letter.
